๐ Whale Shark Sighting on Koh Tao
A dive we'll never forget
Some dives stay with you forever.
During a recent trip to Chumphon Pinnacle, our guests were treated to one of the most memorable encounters the Gulf of Thailand has to offer โ a beautiful whale shark appeared out of the blue and spent several minutes circling the dive site.
The conditions that morning were excellent. Visibility was good, the sea was calm and large schools of barracuda and fusiliers surrounded the pinnacle. Nobody expected what would happen next.
About halfway through the dive, one of our divers pointed into the blue. At first it looked like a shadow in the distance, but within seconds the distinctive shape became clear. A whale shark was slowly approaching the reef.
The gentle giant moved effortlessly through the water, completely unbothered by the divers around it. For several unforgettable minutes, everyone simply stopped and watched.
Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world and can grow well over 10 meters in length. Despite their size, they are harmless filter feeders that feed mainly on plankton and small fish.
Koh Tao is one of the best places in Thailand to encounter whale sharks. While sightings can never be guaranteed, Chumphon Pinnacle and Southwest Pinnacle are among the most famous whale shark locations in the region.
Every encounter is different. Sometimes the whale shark passes by for only a few seconds. On other occasions it remains around the dive site for quite some time, giving lucky divers the opportunity to enjoy a truly spectacular experience.
For many divers on board, this was the first whale shark they had ever seen in the wild. The excitement continued all the way back to Koh Tao, with everyone sharing photos, videos and stories from the encounter.
Experiences like this are one of the reasons why divers return to Koh Tao year after year.
Maybe the next whale shark sighting will happen on your dive.
